Annamalaiyar Temple is one of the biggest and grandest temples in South India.
Shiva is worshiped
as Annamalaiyar or Arunachaleswarar with his idol referred to as Agni lingam.
His consort Parvati is
depicted as Unnamulai Amman.
The temple is of great architectural importance and sculptural
beauty owing to its unique towers, high rampart wall, spacious gateways called the ‘Gopurams’,
large mandapams and fine tanks.
It is the holy hill at Thiruvanamalai.
Every year in the Tamil month of Karthigai (Nov-Dec),
the Karthigai Deepam is lit atop the hill.
Many devotees come here to take part in the ‘Girivalam’ or
‘Giri pradakshina’, a 14 Km long walk surrounding the Arunachaleshwara Swamy temple and
performing pradakshina around the holy hill on bare foot to free them of their sins.
Sri Ramana Ashram
This ashram situated at the foot of the Arunachala hill served as a home to Advaita
Vedanta philosopher Ramana Maharshi from 1922 until his death in 1950.
His samadhi shrine
continues to attract devotees from all over the world.
Sathanur Dam is one of the major dams in Tamil Nadu constructed across the Thenpennai River.
Beautiful parks are maintained inside the dam which is said to attract tourists. You can also visit the
crocodile farm present here.
